What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

A plain-English definition of GEO — what it is, why it matters now, what moves it, and how to measure it.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how your brand appears in the answers AI assistants give — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity. It’s the AI-era counterpart to SEO: instead of optimizing to rank a page, you optimize to be in the recommendation.

What is GEO?

When someone asks an AI assistant “what’s the best tool for X?”, the model doesn’t return a list of links — it returns an answer, naming one to three options. GEO is everything you do to make sure your brand is named, named prominently, and described well in those answers. You’ll also see it called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) or “AI SEO”; the core idea is the same.

Why it matters now

A fast-growing share of buying research now starts with an AI assistant instead of a search engine, and people trust the answer. If the model doesn’t mention you, you’re invisible at the moment of decision — and because there’s no “page two” and often no click, you can’t even tell it’s happening. That blind spot is why GEO exists as a discipline.

The one-line version

SEO asks “where does my page rank?” GEO asks “when a buyer asks AI which product to pick, am I in the answer — and how do I compare?”

How GEO works

AI assistants form recommendations by reading and synthesising the open web — often with live search — plus what they learned in training. So your visibility in answers is shaped by what trusted sources say about you: comparison articles, documentation, review sites, community threads. The model weighs that evidence and produces a confident shortlist.

GEO is a tracking problem: answers differ by engine and shift day to day.

What actually moves GEO

  • Earned citations. Being referenced by the sources models trust — the single biggest lever.
  • Clear comparison content. Pages that directly answer “X vs Y” and “best X for Y” give models something clean to lift.
  • Structured, factual pages. Plain answers to real questions, easy for a model to quote.
  • Solid SEO fundamentals. GEO sits on top of SEO, not instead of it — see GEO vs. SEO for where they diverge.

How to measure it

You can’t improve what you can’t see, and you can’t eyeball this from one chat. Measuring GEO means asking many buyer questions, across several engines, repeatedly, and parsing each answer for whether you’re mentioned, where, how, and on the strength of which sources. That’s what Visiblee does automatically — enter your domain and it generates the questions, runs them continuously, and scores your visibility. Here is a quick guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends you.

FAQ

Is GEO the same as SEO? No — same goal (get recommended), different surface and metrics. GEO measures brand mentions in AI answers, not page rank on a results page.

Is GEO the same as AEO? Effectively yes; “Answer Engine Optimization” is another name for optimizing for AI-generated answers.

Do I need a separate tool for it? To track it reliably, yes — the data lives across multiple models and changes week to week. A lightweight tracker like Visiblee is the cheapest way to start.
