How to check whether ChatGPT recommends your brand

A simple, repeatable way to find out if the AI your customers use is putting you on the shortlist.

Your buyers are asking ChatGPT for product recommendations right now. The good news: you can find out whether it’s recommending you in about five minutes, for free. Here’s how to do it — and how to turn a one-off check into something you can actually rely on.

Why this is worth checking

When an AI assistant answers “what’s the best tool for X?” it usually names one to three options. If you’re not one of them, you’re invisible at the exact moment someone is deciding — and unlike a low Google ranking, nothing tells you it’s happening. The first step is simply to look.

Check it yourself in 5 minutes

Open ChatGPT (with web search on) and try a few prompts a real buyer would use:

  • The category question: “What’s the best [your category] for [your customer]?”
  • The shortlist question: “What are some alternatives to [a competitor]?”
  • The direct question: “Is [your brand] any good? How does it compare?”

Repeat each in a fresh chat (so previous context doesn’t bias the answer), and try the same prompts in Gemini and Perplexity — the answers will differ.

What to actually look for

Don’t just check whether your name appears. Read for four things:

  • Mention — are you named at all?
  • Position — first, or a footnote after three competitors?
  • Sentiment — how are you described next to them?
  • Citations — which sources did the model lean on? Those are what you’d need to influence.

Why one check isn’t enough

A manual check is a snapshot of a moving target. Answers shift between models and from day to day, so one reading can’t tell a real change from noise. Doing it properly means many buyer questions, across several engines, repeated regularly, with consistent wording — which is hours a week, every week. We dig into that trade-off in Visiblee vs. checking by hand.

How to track it properly

This is exactly what Visiblee automates. Enter your domain and it generates the buyer questions for you, runs them across the major engines with live web search, and tracks mention, position, sentiment, and citations every day — so instead of a five-minute snapshot you get a trend you can act on.
