GEO vs. SEO: what actually changes when your buyers ask AI

They share a goal but not a playbook. Here's what's different, what's the same, and how to start measuring GEO.

For twenty years, “being found” meant ranking on Google. Now a growing share of your buyers skip the search results entirely and ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity which product to choose — and they trust the answer. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you stay visible when there are no blue links to rank for.

GEO and SEO are often described as the same job with a new name. They’re not. They share a goal — be the thing that gets recommended — but the surface, the mechanics, and the way you measure success are different enough that treating GEO as “SEO for AI” will quietly cost you. Here’s what changes, what doesn’t, and how to start measuring it.

The moment that matters now: a buyer asks, and the model names a shortlist. Are you on it?

The shift: from links to answers

A search engine returns a page of options and lets the user choose. An AI assistant returns an answer — usually a short, confident recommendation of one to three options. That single difference cascades into everything else. There is no page two to climb onto. There is often no click at all. The model reads the web, forms a view, and hands the user a conclusion.

If your brand isn’t in that conclusion, you are invisible at the exact moment a decision is being made — and unlike a low Google ranking, you can’t even see it happening. That blind spot is the entire reason GEO exists as a discipline.

What actually changes

The practical differences come down to four things:

  • The unit of visibility. SEO tracks a URL’s position for a keyword. GEO tracks whether your brand is mentioned in an answer, how prominently, and how it’s described next to competitors.
  • The query. People type fragments into Google (“best crm small business”) but ask AI full, conversational questions (“what CRM should a two-person startup use if we live in Gmail?”). You optimise for intent, not keywords.
  • The ranking signal. Backlinks and on-page SEO still matter, but models lean heavily on what trusted sources say about you — comparison articles, docs, Reddit threads, review sites. Citations are the new currency.
  • The volatility. Answers change between models and from day to day. A one-off check is a snapshot of a moving target; GEO is a tracking problem, not an audit.

GEO vs. SEO, side by side

The same intent, measured two different ways:

  • Goal — SEO: rank a page. GEO: be in the recommendation.
  • Surface — SEO: a results page. GEO: a generated answer.
  • Metric — SEO: position & clicks. GEO: mention rate, position in the answer, sentiment, share of voice vs. competitors.
  • Levers — SEO: keywords, links, technical health. GEO: earned citations, clear comparison content, structured facts the model can lift.
  • Cadence — SEO: monthly rank checks. GEO: continuous, because the models and the web behind them move.

The one-line version

SEO asks “where does my page rank?” GEO asks “when a buyer asks an AI which product to pick, am I in the answer — and how do I compare?”

What stays the same

GEO doesn’t replace your SEO work — it sits on top of it. Models are trained on and cite the open web, so the fundamentals still pay off: clear, well-structured content; pages that directly answer real questions; a credible presence on the sites and communities your buyers (and the models) trust. If you’ve done good SEO, you have a head start. The difference is what you measure and what you ship next.

How to start measuring GEO

You can’t improve what you can’t see, and you can’t eyeball this by pasting a prompt into one chatbot — you’d need to ask many buyer questions, across several models, repeatedly, and parse every answer for how your brand shows up. That’s exactly the gap Visiblee fills:

  • Enter your domain — we infer what you sell and who you compete with.
  • We generate the buyer-intent questions for your category and run them across the major AI engines with live web search.
  • You get a visibility score, your rank against competitors, the sentiment of each mention, and the citations that shaped the answer — tracked continuously.

That turns GEO from guesswork into a workflow: see which questions you lose, which competitors win them, and which citations you’d need to earn to turn it around — then ship the page that does it.
