How to rank in Google AI Overview and AI Mode
What feeds Google's AI answers, how AI Overview differs from AI Mode, and how to get your brand named in both.

Google’s AI Overview now sits above the classic results on a growing share of searches, answering the question before anyone scrolls. Ranking in it isn’t a different game from SEO — it’s SEO with the dial turned toward structure, sources, and comparison. Here is how to earn a place in the answer, and in AI Mode behind it.
AI Overview and AI Mode
AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google places at the top of a normal search results page. It reads the query, synthesises an answer from the web, and cites a handful of pages inline. AI Mode is the dedicated, conversational surface — a full chat experience powered by Gemini where you can ask follow-ups, and where Google fans your question out into many sub-queries before composing a longer, more thorough answer. Both pull from Google’s live index, so the work that gets you into one usually helps with the other.
How Google picks sources
AI Overview and AI Mode don’t invent facts from nowhere — they ground their answers in pages Google already crawls and trusts, then quote and link the strongest ones. The signals overlap heavily with classic ranking, but a few lean harder:
- Structured data. Schema markup, clean headings, and explicit question-and-answer formatting make a page trivial for the model to lift and cite.
- Comparison and “best of” content. Pages that directly answer “X vs. Y” or “best X for Y” give the model a ready-made shortlist to summarise.
- Reviews and third-party validation. What other trusted sites say about you — review platforms, roundups, community threads — carries weight the model can corroborate.
- Authoritative references. Documentation, primary sources, and pages with clear expertise and freshness are preferred when the model needs a confident citation.
The short version
If a strong page already ranks on page one and answers the question plainly, it has a real shot at being cited. AI Overview rewards clarity and corroboration, not keyword stuffing. How it differs from blue-link ranking
Classic ranking is positional — you are #3 for a keyword and you either get the click or you don’t. Appearing in an AI Overview is citational. The answer is composed from several pages at once, and being cited often matters more than the exact position you hold in the underlying results. A page sitting at #6 can be quoted in the Overview while #1 is skipped, because the model chose the source that answered most cleanly. The practical consequence: zero-click is the norm. The user gets their answer without visiting you, so your goal shifts from earning the click to being named and described well inside the answer itself.
AI Overview vs. AI Mode
The two share an engine but behave differently. AI Overview is a single, compact summary stapled to a standard SERP — it cites a few sources and the rest of the page is still there. AI Mode is conversational and far more exploratory: Google decomposes your prompt into many parallel searches (“query fan-out”) and weaves the results into a longer answer, so a wider set of pages can surface. Because AI Mode casts a broader net, depth and breadth of coverage — multiple solid pages across the topic, not one hero article — tend to help more there than on the Overview.
The ranking playbook
- Answer the question first. Lead each page with a direct, quotable answer in the opening lines, then expand. Models lift the clean summary.
- Mark it up. Add FAQ, Article, and Product schema where relevant, and use descriptive H2/H3s that mirror real questions.
- Build comparison pages. “Best X for Y” and “X vs. Y” pages are the format AI answers love to summarise.
- Earn third-party mentions. Reviews, roundups, and citations from trusted sites give the model corroboration it needs to name you confidently.
- Keep SEO fundamentals strong. If you don’t rank in the index, you can’t be cited by the layer built on top of it.
How to track your presence
You can’t improve what you can’t see, and AI answers shift by query and by day, so eyeballing one search tells you nothing. Tracking presence means running many buyer questions repeatedly and checking, for each, whether you appear and how you’re described. Start with the free AI Visibility Checker to see where you show up across AI answers, and the Google AI Mode Checker to test specific queries against AI Mode directly. To monitor it continuously — weekly runs across many questions, scored over time — Visiblee does the tracking for you.

Do I need new tactics, or just better SEO? Mostly better SEO, aimed differently. The same crawlable, authoritative pages rank in both — you just lean harder on structured data, direct answers, and comparison content so the model can quote you.
Can I pay to appear in AI Overview? No. AI Overview citations are organic; they’re drawn from Google’s index, not bought. Ads sit separately on the page.
Why does my page rank #1 but never get cited? Citation is about which source answers most cleanly, not raw position. A lower-ranked page with a sharper, well-structured answer can be quoted instead. Tighten your opening answer and add schema.
Is AI Mode worth tracking separately? Yes — its query fan-out surfaces a wider set of pages than the Overview, so your presence can differ. The Google AI Mode Checker lets you test it directly.
